We hope you enjoy this first issue of MedWorks’ E-News. We look forward to working with you in 2008 to help your company’s employees reduce their stress and improve their health.

On a recent episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, hip-hop entrepreneur Russell Simmons started talking about the value of practicing meditation, and Bill Maher said that it had been on his personal to-do list to learn how to meditate.

I immediately knew that if Bill Maher – like the employees in corporate America that I teach - was going to learn how to reduce stress through meditation, he needed the MedWorks’ one-hour “Learn to Meditate” class.

One thing led to another, and I later taught Bill Maher how to meditate at his home in Beverly Hills. While this is not our usual market, it shows meditation’s growing acceptance in our popular culture.

Don’t forget to meditate – if only for a few moments – every day.

The following meditation technique –breath focus – can be done for one minute to reduce stress and improve your outlook and productivity for the whole day.

• Experience how it simply feels to breathe, moment by moment: feel the air come into your nose, down your throat, into your lungs, feel your chest rise and fall, etc. Try to really feel it as it changes, moment by moment. For a few moments focus on your breath as if it’s the most important thing in the world right now.

• Notice everything else that comes up in your mind (“This is ridiculous” or “I don’t have time for this now”), and just allow it to go by and disappear, like clouds on a windy day.

• Close your eyes briefly, or just let them rest on a random spot somewhere, until you feel you’re done with the exercise.

Repeat this exercise for one minute or longer as needed during your hectic and stressful workday.
